About Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar:

Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar was born and raised in India. At age 12, he met his spiritual teacher in the Himalayas and spent several years under his guidance. The Guru initiated Shyamji into the Saivite tradition of Tantra—imparting a rare oral tradition of sacred sounds (nada yoga), breath (svara yoga), and spiritual wisdom. The grace of the guru and the spiritual practices he imparted are the basis for Shyamji’s extraordinary intuition and unique chanting of sounds and mantra.

Several years later Shyamji studied with the renowned vocalist, Pran Nath, and his disciple Jagdish Mohan. During this period, Shyamji further developed his unique ability to play music and chant in unique ways that can open direct pathways to pure consciousness. From these great vocalists, Shyamji also learned how to play the tambura, an ancient drone instrument.

At age 24 Shyamji migrated to the USA and began teaching about the effects of sound on consciousness. In the 1970s he frequently taught at the Esalen Institute and at UC Berkeley. In his 20s, Shyamji also began performing concerts around the USA, including playing tambura with Ravi Shankar on several occasions at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

During this time period, on several occasions Shyamji had clear visions of the chakra system and the intricate interconnectivity between the subtle and gross bodies. On one occasion, in deep meditation he underwent an extended period of automatic writing. These writings are the basis for Shyamji's lifework, Microchakra Psychology and Innertuning Systems.

Shyamji founded the Chakra Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the integration of ancient Indian wisdom, music, and artistic expression with modern science and psychology. At the Chakra Institute, Shyamji teaches workshops and leads 3-body purification retreats. He's also on the faculty of the Open Center, New York’s leading center of holistic learning and he travels the globe to play concerts and provide practical teachings for spiritual growth.
