Friday, July 22, 2011
The Movement Center Meditation Hall
7:30 pm
Suggested donation: $20
You're invited to join us for a concert of Indian classical music on Friday, July 22, at 7:30 pm. We're honored to have Alam Khan, son of the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, performing on sarode. Alam will be accompanied by Javad Butah on tabla and Josh Feinberg on sitar.
Alam's family has had a long association with The Movement Center. Maestro Ali Akbar Khan played many concerts at The Movement Center over the years, especially to celebrate
Swami Chetanananda's birthday (July 25). Alam is now carrying on this tradition.
We will not be selling tickets in advance for this concert--if you'd like to come, just plan to make a donation at the door. Doors will open at 7:00 pm. You'll find directions to The Movement Center and parking information here.
About Alam Khan
Son of the legendary Sarode Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, Alam has been touching the hearts of audiences worldwide for the past 15 years. Since his initial training into the Maihar Seni Gharana at the age of seven, Alam was blessed to learn and live in the traditional style of Guru and student. Ali Akbar Khan's careful crafting and guidance shows in each note as well as in Alam's imaginative way of expressing the ancient ragas passed down from the courts of Emperor Akbar by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.
Alam began his international performance career by accompanying his father onstage from 1996 to 2006. They played in such prestigious venues as the Royal Jodhpur Palace, the Dover Lane Music Festival in Calcutta, and New York's Lincoln Center Jazz festival, as well as highly acclaimed concerts all over the United States, Canada, Europe and India.
Along with accompanying his esteemed father, Alam's inner voice began to emerge and grow with his solo career, which began in 1998. He has toured worldwide and established himself as Ali Akbar Khan's true heir and the face of a new generation of Sarode players, attracting praise and attention from musical icons such as Sitar Legend Ravi Shankar, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, Saxophonist John Handy, Slide Guitarist Derek Trucks, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, and many more of India's finest musicians.
Alam has had the privilege and honor of performing alongside some of India's greatest Tabla masters--such as Swapan Chaudhuri, Zakir Hussain and Anindo Chatterjee--in a constantly growing list of highly reputed venues, including the Dover Lane Music Festival, Saptak, Zakir Hussain's annual Barsi concert (in honor of Ustad Allarakha), the Darbar Festival, the San Francisco World Music Festival, the Chicago World Music Festival and the Carnegie Group in New York City.
Alam was the personal assistant to his father during his final years of life, helping aid him in teaching at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California--a mecca for students and lovers of Indian classical music. Alam, following his father's wishes, is now the teacher of advanced instrumental and intermediate vocal classes at the Ali Akbar College of Music and has dedicated his life to preserving, performing and teaching this music to the world.
About Josh Feinberg
Born into a musical family, Josh Feinberg was introduced to music through classical piano at four years old and later, the bass at eight. As he entered adolescence Josh became interested in improvisation and became increasingly dedicated to music. He began studying jazz and through that path found his passion for North Indian classical music.
It was the music of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee that made a particularly strong impression on him. From the moment he started studying Hindustani music, Josh was very dedicated to riyaz or practice; it was not unusual for him to practice ten to twelve hours in a day. He bought his first instrument at age fifteen, and studied with Dr. Peter Row while attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In 2005, Josh initiated his training with Maestro Ali Akbar Khan and has also received training and guidance from the maestro’s senior disciples including Sri James Pomerantz, Anindya Banerjee and Dr. George Ruckert. Presently, Josh is continuing his training with Ali Akbar Khan’s sons Maestro Aashish Khan and Sri Alam Khan.
In addition to serving as the sitar faculty at Lewis and Clark College, Josh has performed throughout the US, India, and Canada. Some of his most notable performances and lecture/demonstrations have been organized by Harvard University, ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, and the Gandhi Memorial Center in Washington DC. He has worked with Savion Glover, Richie Barshay, Patrick Lamb, Samir Chatterjee, and Gideon Freudmann among others.
Josh currently resides in Portland, Oregon with his poet-wife Jessica and his daughter Sophia. He is pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts through Goddard College and is set to graduate in the Spring of 2013.
About Javad Butah
A disciple of world-renowned Tabla master Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Javad's comprehensive approach to the instrument reflects his training at the hands of one of the finest Tabla artists alive today. In addition to his impressive technique, Javad's overall musicality, expressed equally in solo performance and accompaniment, leaves a lasting impression on listeners and has made him an in-demand young artist.
Javad is amongst a few who have had the rare honor of becoming an official "gandabandh" disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. He has had the honor of accompanying world-renowned artists such as Ustad Aashish Khan and Ustad Sultan Khan. He has played in such venues worldwide as the Peter Norton Symphony Space in New York, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Saptak Music Festival in Ahmedabad, India.
Currently, Javad is pursuing a graduate degree under the tutelage and guidance of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, eminent exponent of the Lucknow Gharana, at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, CA.
With a deep love for the inexhaustible art of tabla, Javad is always continuing to learn and develop. His playing, noteworthy for its clarity and fine sound quality, represents a virtuosic tradition alive in a new generation.
