Our favorite kirtan artists, Heather and Benjy Wertheimer of Shantala, will be performing a special benefit event on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 7:00 pm. They'll be joined by the very talented Sean Frenette on guitar and vocals as well as Beyonce's guitarist and musical director, Bibi McGill.
The proceeds from the show will be donated to the Maher Ashram in Pune, India. Maher, in the Marathi language, means "Mother's Home": A haven of hope, belonging and understanding. Maher Ashram's mission is to help destitute women, children and men from all over India exercise their right to a higher quality of life, irrespective of gender, caste, creed or religion.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. To register for low-income tickets, email Shantala.
About the artists:
Bibi McGill is so much more than the woman behind the blazing guitar riffs that have elevated Beyoncé's live performances to the next level. As the touring guitarist and Musical Director of Beyoncé's 10-piece, all-female band, Bibi showcases her ability to rock her own original compositions within the framework of Beyoncé hits, all while overseeing the rest of the musicians and production elements onstage.
After graduating from The University of Colorado, with a Bachelors Degree in Music Scoring and Arranging, Bibi moved to California to cut her teeth in the clubs of Los Angeles. Bibi developed her impressive stage persona and indispensable expertise on the massive stages of Latin American with the likes of Paulina Rubio, often dubbed Mexico's Madonna, and Chilean rockers La Ley before joining Beyoncé's team. Making her home in Portland, Oregon, Bibi's healthy lifestyle is what keeps the afroed and intricately tattooed guitarist balanced.
Focusing her entrepreneurial energy on her own line of handmade, organic Bibi Kale Chips, she is also an accomplished yogi who strives to make yoga available to everyone. Having a passion for yoga and Kirtan since her first introduction in 1998, Bibi has also performed with Kirtan artists Dave Stringer, Karnamrita Dasi, Shantala, CC White, Simrit Kaur, The Hanumen and Gurunam Singh. Look for Bibi's "Peace, Jungle, LOVE" tour of Brazil in August 2015 in which she will will share her yoga workshops, health & wellness lectures, Kirtan, animal activism and youth out reach with the people of Brazil.
Benjy and Heather Wertheimer lead kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide as the duo Shantala, with soul-stirring vocals, sacred lyrics and exotic instrumentation. The weaving of Benjy's Indian classical singing and instrumentation with Heather's soaring vocals is freshly original and profoundly moving. Together they create music with beauty, passion, and reverence. Shantala has performed and recorded internationally with such sacred music luminaries as Krishna Das, Deva Premal & Miten, and Jai Uttal. In summer 2008, they were named as one of the top "Wallahs to Watch" by Yoga + Joyful Living.
Sean Frenette is a guitarist/bard/multi-instrumentalist/composer/artist. His multi-faceted creative pursuits have led to many adventures including the opportunity to share music in many wonderful places with many beautiful people: three times at Carnegie Hall; in 2006 with a host of musical pioneers led by Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall; in 2009 with master Indian musician Zakir Hussain and a coterie of young virtuosos; and in May of 2010 with composer/conductor John Adams and Ensemble ACJW (Academy, Carnegie, Juilliard, and Weill institute). Sean has been very active on the West Coast since his move to Portland, Oregon in 2008 playing with Matt Butler's Everyone Orchestra, kirtan artists Benjy and Heather Werthheimer of Shantala, Dave Stringer, singer Lindsey Stormo, and as a soloist. He also sings with the 8 part Estonian choir Trillium Voices.
